NSW Premier must announce judicial inquiry into money laundering in pubs and clubs now
8 Dec 2021
With further revelations this morning confirming that money laundering is widespread in pubs and clubs across the state, the Alliance for Gambling Reform is now calling for a public judicial inquiry.
Tim Costello, the Chief Advocate for the Alliance says:
“Our pubs and clubs have been taken over by organised crime, it’s as simple as that.
“We’ve now got concrete evidence that this is widespread and happening right across NSW. You’ve got families having dinner in their local pub and just metres away drug money is being washed clean in the poker machines.
“For too long the Liberals, Nationals, NSW Labor and pubs and clubs have turned a blind eye to this problem. Well, that time is over. It’s out in the open and it’s time to tackle this head on. We need a public judicial inquiry now.
“A judicial inquiry will have the power, the independence and the scope to get to the heart of this crisis. They will be unafraid to speak truth to power and put the safety and wellbeing of our community first.
“Victor Dominello has been the first Minister I’ve worked alongside in my 25 years of campaigning to attempt to proactively address these systemic issues. If he is taken away in the upcoming cabinet reshuffle it will be a telltale sign that the industry, not the Premier, is calling the shots.
“Which is why we need Dominic Perrottet to stand up and show that our government won’t be pushed around by the gambling industry bigwigs and announce a public judicial inquiry into money laundering now."
