Pokies Don’t Belong in Surf Clubs

8 January 2025

Surf clubs are at the heart of Aussie culture—family-friendly venues offering lifesaving services and breathtaking beachfront views. Yet, these beloved spaces are tainted by the presence of pokies, which cause devastating gambling harm.

On the Gold Coast alone, 17 surf clubs host 583 pokies, collecting a staggering $46M annually. Despite claims that gambling profits support the community, reports show venues typically return just 2% of these earnings to charity. Meanwhile, taxpayers heavily subsidise these clubs, providing them with prime beachfront land.

Pokies are linked to rising family violence, relationship breakdowns, and even suicides. Research reveals gambling harm affects not just players but six others around them. Removing pokies won’t compromise lifesaving services but could restore the values these clubs stand for.

Voices for Gambling Reform

A key part of the Alliance’s work is how we work with people who have experienced gambling harm, known as the Voices for Gambling Reform.

Their experiences and stories are central to everything we do and have played a pivotal role in many key legislative changes.

Over the past year, our Voices have campaigned for gambling reform by sharing their stories in the media, speaking to federal and state politicians, as well as providing evidence at government inquiries and hearings.

Send your letter to your MP

Our Federal Parliament is now considering a range of gambling reforms, including a total ban on gambling advertising. Gambling is causing devastating financial losses and social harms across the country.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to prevent gambling harm and to protect our kids from being targeted by the gambling industry online and through advertising and sponsorship that is now embedded in our sports.

It’s time for the Government to act on their own report and protect
Australians from gambling harm
