"That moment inspired me..."
Mark Stockwell’s life took a drastic turn when he was sentenced to a two-year jail term for using his employer’s money to pay off gambling debts. His exposure to gambling harm had spiralled out of control, and prison felt like the end of the road. Mark often wondered who would be there for him when he was released and whether life would be worth living. “As I sat in that jail cell for two years, I kept thinking – what do I have to look forward to when I get out?” he reflected.

During his time in prison, Mark found solace in his fortnightly conversations with his church reverend. These talks provided the hope and inner strength he needed to envision a better future. “The minister from my church accepted my calls every fortnight, keeping me on track and giving me hope that there was something to look forward to once my sentence was over,” Mark shared.
“Upon my release on parole, I went to church that very next Sunday. Everyone there knew where I had been for the past two years because I had written to them and shared my story. When I walked back into the church, the minister welcomed me, and I received a standing ovation along with forgiveness from my community. That moment inspired me to get involved with the Alliance to help prevent others from experiencing what I went through.”

This week’s Gambling Harm Awareness Week emphasises the vital role that friends, loved ones, and community play in helping those affected by gambling harm. Families and communities that choose to lift others up rather than tear them down truly embody the spirit of #GHAW. They help amplify the voices of those affected. #GHAW2024
